Comparison between High Current Method and Abnormal Frequency Method for Ground Network Conduction Tester

The grounding grid continuity tester is an instrument used to detect the continuity and grounding resistance of the grounding grid. The high current method and the frequency difference method are two commonly used testing methods, which differ in principle, scope of application, and test results.


1. High current method (also known as direct current method):

The high current method calculates the grounding resistance by injecting direct current into the grounding grid and measuring the voltage drop and current value. Its main characteristics are as follows:

① The test current is relatively large, usually several tens of amperes, which can effectively detect the continuity of the grounding grid.

② Suitable for precise measurement of grounding resistance values, especially for testing grounding grids with small resistance values.

③ The testing process is relatively long and requires more time to complete.


2. Inter frequency method (also known as communication method):

The cross frequency method is tested by injecting an AC signal into the grounding grid and measuring the voltage drop and phase difference at different frequencies. Its main characteristics are as follows:

① It can be tested during actual operation without the need for power outage operation.

② Suitable for rapid detection of grounding grid continuity, with good results for conducting tests on thicker grounding grids.

③ The testing current is small, and the commonly used frequency is between 1kHz and 10kHz.

④ The measurement accuracy of the grounding resistance value is relatively low, which is suitable for preliminary evaluation of the grounding grid conductivity.

In summary, the high current method is suitable for accurately measuring the grounding resistance value, while the frequency difference method is suitable for quickly detecting the continuity of the grounding grid. According to actual needs and testing requirements, appropriate testing methods can be selected for conducting grounding grid continuity testing.
